Anyone letterboxing?

From: Lisa Lazar (lazar.bauer@earthlink.net) | Date: 2007-06-12 14:17:47 UTC
I know that at least one group is letterboxing, because my intern's
Johnny Cash box was found by the Baker Street Searchers (Sheri was so
delighted).

What are the rest of you up to?

We've been cycling and Robb has been doing oodles of aquatic therapy.

For some reason, I've been re-bitten by the knitting bug.

But not much carving has been happening at our house...

What about the rest of you? Carving any shards of rubber, these days?

Lisa

Well, we went on vacation last week and got some boxes then. We also
planted some and are carving for our first postal which starts soon.
Other then boxing we haven't been up to much.

I haven't done any carving myself... and have also been knitting furiously.
It seems like with the gorgeous weather lately, I'd be more into boxing than
wool, but what can you do? I feel like I got myself involved in too many
postals and other carving obligations and got burned out on carving, which I
guess spilled over to letterboxing. I've finished all my postals, etc.,
but can't seem to get excited about a day of boxing...

I was planning on introducing a co-worker to letterboxing using the
Johnny Cash box, but then he decided he wanted to bring his wife & baby,
so decided to check on FunHog's Powerhouse instead (nice short walk).
Turns out the wife's parents are alleged letterboxers, but I'm still
thinking he's getting it mixed up with GeoCaching. He said the
father-in-law would probably go under the trail name of "Inigo" (as in
"You killed my father, prepare to die"). Anyone seen that name out
there?

Still planning on trying for Johhny Cash box during lunch some time
before it gets too hot up here.

& as to what I'm doing instead of rubber mutilation, I'm painting small
army men to stage big tabletop battles.

I also got burned out on letterboxing for a while...been doing a lot of
webdesign stuff lately, which is sort of an alternative craft hobby for
me.

For those of you interested in the Silver Pendant stuff I mentioned a
while back, would any of you maybe be interested in having a small craft
afternoon, ala the Eggstravaganza put on so wonderfully by Lisa and Robb?
I would teach you hands-on how to make your own silver pendants with your
own hand-carved design, instead of making them for you. You would go home
with your pendant that day.

If there's enough interest, and someone with more space can host, I'd
commit to gathering supplies and hauling my kiln somewhere for an
afternoon. There'd be a fee for supplies, and I'd prefer to teach a small
group of about 5-6 - this ensures that everyone gets attention and that
there's time for everyone's work to be completed for same-day take-home.
I'd be willing to teach a group as small as 2-3 if there was interest from
only a few people.

This way, you can get your carve on in a small way and not actually have
to plant a box. :)

Crafting ahoy?

I could host. I've got good air handling, and loads fo space.

Well, good air handling on the days that the City of Oakland isn't
treating us to the lovely fragrant of sewage treatment. Ugh!

I'd love to take part in a silver pendant crafting afternoon - especially if
it's in Oakland! Lemme know when/where!

We have been working in the yard and painting the house inside and
out. Putting lots of sweat into making it feel like home.

I carved a signature stamp for my sister, who is new to letterboxing.
We introduced her to the hobby in Old Sac last year. She lives in
Chile and is back stateside for an extended visit.

We are also working on our cross-country road trip in August, planning
the route and researching letterboxes the entire way. Even though we
haven't done any hands on searching recently, we feel very involved
with letterboxing right now.

I'd be interesting in attending if it's on a weekend where I don't work.

I actually went out letterboxing twice this week. Yesterday I did a round in San Jose and
on Wednesday I was in Albany for the Scary Movie letterbox. Although a bit spooky, this
was a great location! I have also been carving a box to plant in Hollywood or Pasadena
next week when Amanda and I are down there for the Nancy Drew conference, set to
coincide with the release date of the movie! So excited!

Hey all--

We've actually been 'boxing most weekends although not necessarily getting "quantity". There've been a lot of plants in the Sacramento area and we've gotten quite a few of them.

We have a 7-box series carved and ready to plant and have been scoping out a great place. Happy to say, last weekend, Old Blue found JUST the spot (while I was on a quilting retreat in Mt. Shatsa) and we're planning to plant it next weekend. Keep your eyes open for our post.

Lea: we've been thinking of you so much lately with all the Nancy Drew movie chatter! Have a GREAT time with Amanda and all the other sleuths in So. Cal!

Hey Lisa,

Thanks for checking in with all of us! I'm so glad I got to see everyone
in San Jose, 'cuz it's been the full-tilt work boogie ever since. No
boxing on any horizon, although Tahoe will be having boxing visitors
the last couple of weeks of June, so I'll do a little tour-guiding.
I've been getting up at 5 am the last 6 and a half weeks, literally
working my ass off (I'm a third of the way to my weight-loss goal),
trying to get in shape to climb Whitney with friends over Labor Day
weekend. I'd better get carving if I'm going to leave something up
there for Ryan and Miss Piggy, the hard-core hikers. :-)

Hey, what happened to the Letterboxing Cruise? I was "cruising" the
events list several weeks ago and noted with envy some of our friends
signed up to go to sea a'boxing. But it seems to have dropped off the
radar.

I hope you're all enjoying your summer! Kel

The cruise is still on for June of next year, New York to Bermuda.
The chatter has calmed down since Mark and Sue Pepe started a chat
list on LBNA for those who have booked the cruise. The info page is
linked from the Pepe's blog on Atlas Quest. I believe there is a
little over a week left to guarantee a spot on the ship. We will be
aboard but haven't noticed any other West Coast Boxers signed up yet.

Last week I got my first 2 SF boxes (thanks Lisa) while in the city
while working, and today my wife and kids took me to Sonoma to box for
fathers day. We got some new boxes by UKUSA. What a great day. I am
recarving some of my missing Petaluma stamps and hope to have em
replanted soon-WW
